40 percent of satellite TV channel logos do not conform to regulations

The Language and Character Administration Department of the Ministry of Education recently noted that presently around 40 percent of the logos of China's satellite TV channels are substandard, and suggested their revision.

Standard spoken and written Chinese characters should be the basic language for radio, film and TV, according to regulations in the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Standard Spoken and Written Chinese Language.

However, over the past several years some TV stations in China have been using abbreviated English names for their logos and have mixed the use of Chinese and English in some TV programs. This harms the image of the TV channels and the publicity effects of programs, and also misguides society's application of the standard spoken and written Chinese language.

About 40 percent of logos for a total of 50 Chinese satellite TV channels do not conform to regulations. Among these, logos for 13 channels, including the 12 channels of China Central Television (CCTV1-CCTV12) and the Shandong Education Television (SDETV) channel, are written completely in English, accounting for 26 percent of the total channels in question. Channels with logos that mix the use of English and Chinese (including abbreviations of pinyin) amounted to seven, accounting for 14 percent of the total channels.
